MARACA IS

DECREE AND DATE OF CREATION: It was created by the Ordinance no. 86.061 of 02.06.1981 

LEGAL ANTECEDENTS: The Station is an oceanic island that suffers great influence of the river Amazonas. It possesses a great swamp extension and the phenomenon of the pororoca also makes himself present in the area. Composed by three islands, Maracá Norte, South and Jipioca. However the island Jipioca is not part of the area in reason of its total destruction for the effect of the erosion, even so the sedimentation of residues of this island it created other acquaintance like Jipioquinha, that comes if forming to the some years, with flora and local fauna. 

AREA, LOCATION is ACCESSES: It possesses 72.000 ha. It is located in the state of the Amapá. The access it is done starting from the city of Amapá, by means of ship, through the river Flexal and of the channel of Carapaporis. The closest city to the unit is Amapá that is to 306 Km of the capital. MARACÁ JIPIÓCA'S ECOLOGICAL STATION locates in the municipal district of Amapá, that is initially acessed being traveled a space rodoviário of 320 Km of the city of Macapá and of the headquarters of the Municipal district of Amapá to the Island of Maracá, the displacement happens with ship to motor being traveled a distance of approximately 40Km.

CLIMATE: The climate humid and hot equatorial determines the physiognomy of the vegetation found in the islands. The annual precipitations are superior to 3.000 mm, they concentrate on the months of December to July. 

RELIEF: The relief in the islands is very plane, reason for the which almost whole island of Maracá is dominated by flooded fields. The medium width registered in the island of Maracá, close to entrance of Igarapé of the Hell, for the channel of Carapaporis is of 9,70 m. 

VEGETATION: It possesses forest perenifolia being accentuated in the small elevations of the land (2 to 15 m), that get rid of the direct action of the water of the sea and of the areas flooded by fluvial action. They deserve to be related the vegetable species as: andiroba, jenipapo, taperebá, sumaúma and palm trees as açaí and Tucumã. 

FAUNA: The fauna is represented in the mammals, for the numerous species of bats, Tamanduá-flag, cutia, capivara, ounce, monkey-nail, mico-of-smell, homosexual mateiro, among others. Of the birds they stand out: maguari, socó, herons, tuiuiú, guará, flamingo, curicaca, hawk, maçarico, gull, parakeet, toucan etc.
